Covestro announced on the 29th that it will introduce a new thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material, Desmopan FLY, which incorporates supercritical fluid (SCF) foaming technology.
This new material meets the footwear industry's demands for lightweight, high-performance, and sustainability, with potential for expansion into various industries such as sports goods, furniture, and electronics.
Supercritical fluids refer to substances that exhibit both liquid and gas characteristics under specific temperature and pressure conditions. This technology primarily utilizes carbon dioxide (CO2) to create an environmentally friendly and safe foaming process, eliminating the need for traditional chemical foaming agents.
Desmopan FLY applies advanced technology to uniformly disperse the supercritical fluid during the molding process. This results in a foam with a consistent microcellular structure, providing excellent mechanical properties.
In particular, in the footwear industry, it enables the creation of midsole materials that offer outstanding cushioning, energy rebound, and long-lasting comfort even during extended wear. Moreover, as no chemical foaming agents or crosslinking agents are required, the midsole can be recycled, and when combined with soft TPU outsoles, the entire sole can be recycled.
